The Nazca Lines geoglyphs are located on a coastal plain some 400 km south of Lima, Peru and consist of around three hundred figures of straight lines, geometric shapes and plant and animal designs believed to have been made by the Nazca people between 1 - 700 A.D. The lines are actually trenches 4 - 6 inches deep and 0.2 - 0.7 miles wide. They were made by scrapping away the topsoil of pebbles revealing a lower layer of yellow-grey clay subsoil. The overall area of the lines is around 19 square miles.
Some of the more notable designs are the animal and plant figures: hummingbird, macaw, condor, monkey, spider and many more.
The best way to see the lines is from the air via an over-flight of a small plane, though there is a tower from which you can clearly see two of the many figures. Our tours utilize the over-flights. You see many more of the figures that way.
The lines were first partly noticed from a nearby hill by the Spanish in 1553. Since that time they have been studied by a number of people and institutions and to this day there does not seem to be a consensus of opinion as to exactly why the lines were made. Some of the theories include: figures to be seen from above by deities; markers for certain dates relating to sunrise and visibility of constellations; worship of deities associated with the supply of water, to name a few.
There are other far less likely alternative theories such as Erich von Daniken’s hypothesis that the lines were made by “ancient astronauts” and a theory by Jim Woodmen that the lines could not have been made without aerial observation to help lay out the lines using hot air balloons.
