Besides the Tigre Peacock, a variety of other fish will be encountered such as: Arawuana, Zorro, Fasaco, or many of the other 206 different species in these waters. They all break lines and lures easily, put up a tremendous fight and are very challenging to catch. Some of you might want to do a little night-fishing for some of the incredible large catfish. Occasionally a 40 pounder is caught!
The following are only some recommendations. Don't hesitate to experiment!
We suggest that you bring at least two 6-1/2' to 7' light or medium-action rods. You should spool your reels with 12 - 17 LB test monofilament line.
PEACOCK
SPECIALS - Medium size, red & white.
RAPALAS
- Medium size, silver & blue, red & white.
RAT-L-TRAPS
- 3/4 oz, sinking and floating, silver & blue, gold.
JERKIN
SAMS - 5/8 oz, red & white.
BROKEN BACK RED FINS - 5/8 oz, chrome & blue, chartreuse & pink, black
& orange.
A 9 foot, 8 or 9 weight graphite rod with a medium to fast action. The reel should hold a floating weight forward line, or floating Bass or Bonefish taper line with 75 yards of 20 LB backing. 6' leaders in the 10 - 20 LB test range with an additional 2' section of comparable tippet material.
Medium sized POPPERS (or as large as you can comfortably cast 30' - 40') in red, white, and yellow, and in combinations thereof, with lots of flash on 1/0 - 3/0 saltwater hooks. BUCKTAIL STREAMERS and DECEIVERS tied blue-over-white, yellow-over-red, yellow-over-white,red-over-white and purple-over-white, with flash are also effective.
These fish destroy flies! Either have plenty or bring your tying gear.
Bring both long pants and shorts. We prefer light-weight pants as opposed to heavy jeans, which take forever to dry, but suit yourself. The new lightweight synthetics designed for hot weather by companies such as Ex-Officio, Columbia, and REI, which wick moisture away from your skin and dry fast are excellent though expensive. They are very comfortable. You will need long-sleeve shirts (the sleeves can be rolled up in heat or down if sun or bugs are a problem), short sleeve shirts and T-shirts. A hat to protect you from the sun. A pair of comfortable shoes. Also bring some thongs or sandals and a bathing suit. The two items most likely to be lost are your hat and sunglasses. You might bring an extra of each. A poncho or light rain jacket is useful.
